21 years in Royal Marines

14th January 1944

Corp George Taylor, husband of Mrs Taylor, 31 Nursery Lane, Quorn who is somewhere at sea, has just completed 21 years service in the Royal Marines. He was recently promoted corporal. He was at one time on the "Ark Royal".

In September 2014, George's great grandson, Keir Gravil, got in touch with the museum team and provided a copy of the original photograph, which is much clearer than the newspaper reproduction.

Below is a little more information about George Taylor and his family:

On 24th December 1927, 24 year old George Alexander Taylor from Loughborough, married 23 year old Ivy May Elizabeth Brewin from Quorn, in Quorn Church. He was a Royal Marine and she was a ‘quill winder’. They probably lived initially with Ivy’s parents, as on the 1931 electoral roll, Ivy Taylor is recorded at 25 Nursery Lane with her parents Edward Brewin and Fanny Elizabeth Brewin, and brother Lawrence.

According to the 1938 electoral roll, George Alexandra [sic] Taylor and his wife Ivy May Taylor were living at 25 High Street, Quorn. This was a newsagent’s shop, but George and Ivy were probably just renting the rooms above. See Artefact 1739 for a picture of the shop.

On the 1947 and 1953 electoral rolls, the couple are recorded as living at 31 Nursery Lane, which fits in with the press cutting.
