Celebrating the relief of Mafeking
Loughborough Herald - May 24th 1900
The relief of Mafeking was duly celebrated on Saturday. Most of the houses had flags flying, and in the evening fireworks were let off, and guns fired, and patriotic songs were sung by young and old.
The church tower was illuminated, and the bells rung in honour of the event. References to the relief of Mafeking were made at the Baptist Church by Rev W J Tomkins, who based his remarks on 1 Cor., 16, 13: "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong". The preacher said that the hearts of all had been thrilled, and their spirits stirred by the heroic stand of Baden-Powell, and his men. Watchfulness, endurance, manliness and strength were splendidly illustrated in the long defence of the little town. These qualities should be incorporated in the Christian character of those present.
