Quorn Excelsior FC – Leicestershire Shield runners up 1904/1905

The small shield below is inscribed:
“Leicestershire Shield 1904-5 Runners-Up”
It was made in silver by the famous firm of Fattorini and Sons, Bradford.

It is owned by Pam Mullens who lives in Australia, and was bought for her in about 2009, from Portobello Road Market, by her daughter who was visiting England at the time. Pam loves the little shield and wears it as a pendant.

Pam initially thought it may relate to a cricket award, and contacted Leicestershire County Cricket Club. It was Richard from LCCC, who applied his sleuthing skills and ascertained from the British Newspaper Archive, that the Leicestershire Shield was a football competition and the runners up in the 1904/05 season were Quorn Excelsior FC.

Pam contacted Quorn Village On-line Museum team and was thrilled that we could add to the story. Artefact 1417 shows Quorn Excelsior in 1905 (image below) with all eleven of the runners-up shields, together with the medals they won for being top of Division Two of the Loughborough and District League.

At this time football was very popular in Quorn and the village had several football teams.

The men in the picture are:
Back row (left to right): F Brown (honorary secretary), A Wilders (trainer), G Barker, W Camm, G H Smith, G Heggs, G Baguley, W H Goodacre (president), F Green
Middle row: A Dexter, A Rennocks, W Inglesant.
Front row: F Mahoney, C Disney, A Mahoney (captain), T Barwell, H Wykes

An item from the Leicester Daily Mercury on Saturday 8th April 1905 provides an account of the match. Quorn came so close to winning!

LEICESTERSHIRE SHIELD
CASTLE DONINGTON BAPTIST v QUORN EXCELSIOR
At Hathern. Donington started the ball, Quorn being the first to press. This was followed by a run down by the Baptists, but soon the latter’s custodian had to save a warm shot. A foul against the Dons in front led to a corner, and Quorn nearly scored. After seven minutes play a splendid low shot from Barwell put the Excelsior ahead. Almost immediately Baptist made a determined effort, and Quorn had to save. A foul was given against them, and from the free, taken by Leas, the ball was netted 15 minutes from the commencement. They were unfortunate in not securing a second. Donington tried hard, having slightly the best of play. The Quorn wings centred well, and the ball was netted, but was disallowed for a foul.
Half-time :- ONE GOAL EACH
The second half opened fast, each side in turn attacking. Quorn tested the Baptists’ goal with two hot shots, and the Dons missed two good openings. Play for some time was equally balanced. Then Donington spurted, and Moody romped through and scored. Result:-
CASTLE DONINGTON BAPTIST, two goals
QUORN EXCELSIOR one goal.
