Quorn, Hunt Class railway engine
Over the years Quorn has given its name to many products; from ships to custard and lathes to cotton thread!
This railway engine, ‘ The Quorn’, was built in 1929 for the LNER (London and North Eastern Railway). It was originally called The Buckinghamshire, but renamed The Quorn in 1932.
It is a Gresley LNER D49 4-4-0 and part of the Hunt Class. The original LNER number was 336 and then in 1946 she was numbered 2727. On the formation of British Railways the allocated number was 62727. She was mainly based at the Hull depot, but it is likely she would have passed through Quorn Station. The engine remained in service until 1961.
There was also a sister engine, 62726, named ‘The Meynell’ which was removed from service in 1957.
