VJ Day – A Quorn man’s memento

This framed memento of VJ Day is a representation of an American newspaper front page, printed on silk, and was brought back from the far east after VJ Day by Jack Sharp who lived in Quorn.

John Kenneth Sharp (usually known as Jack) was born in Leicester in 1908 and married Millicent Winterton in 1937. The couple lived at 17 Warwick Avenue in Quorn, with Jack working as a builder until he joined the Army in WW2. Not much is known about Jack during the war other than he saw service in India and Japan and was in the far east at VJ Day on 15th August 1945. His son Chris didn’t see his dad until he was about two years old.

Jack died in 1982 aged 74.
