Quorn War Memorial, early 1920s
The permanent Quorn War Memorial was opened in 1921 and this photograph was taken shortly afterwards. It was designed by architects Pick, Everard and Keay of Leicester, and although a specialist sculptor and stonemason were used, the main construction work was carried out by local Quorn builder William Henry Fewkes.
The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 24th July 1921, by Colonel Toller from Stafford Lodge. It looked very striking with its bright white stone, contrasting dark slate and beautifully gilded lettering and decoration. On the front face is carved:
“PASS NOT THIS STONE IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE AND MAY YOU LIVE AS NOBLY AS THEY DIED”
