New-look British Legion HQ is reopened - 1963

Loughborough Monitor - 12th April 1963

A stalwart band of Quorn British Legion workers resolved a few years ago to brighten up their headquarters in Meeting Street, and Saturday saw their efforts rewarded after a two year renovation programme.

The hall was officially reopened by an old friend of the village and Legion, Colonel W S N Toller, who now lives in Datchett.

He was amazed at the "wonderful transformation" that had taken place at headquarters, its new floor, lighting, heating, spacious window and kitchen décor was first class. He was officially thanked by Mr W J Bent Beardsley, chairman of the men's section, with Mrs E G Farnham, chairman of the women's section, speaking on behalf of the women. The Colonel received a button-hole presented by Miss Bronwen Jackson.

Mr R B Beardsley presented a resume of the expenses entailed in completing the £300 project. Teas and tombola were followed in the evening by a whist drive officiated over by Mr Jack Field. During the interval a cine show on last year's garden party was presented by Mr R B Beardsley. The prizes at the close were presented by Mrs S Cottle, who had been responsible for organising the evening.

Winners: Mesdames Long, Evans, Millington, Kennely, C Gamble, Callaghan, Palmer and Mr Osborne.

Special competition winners were Mrs Sharpe, Mills, W Sutton and Callaghan. It is expected that with donations, well over £60 will result from the event.

The photograph reads: "Pictured at the reopening of Quorn British Legion after redecoration are (left to right), Mrs B Farnham (chairman of ladies' section), Mr W J B Beardsley (chairman), Colonel W S N Toller (past president), Mr E G A Farnham (president), Mr R B Beardsley (secretary), Rev S H Jackson"
