British Legion effort at Quorn
Loughborough Echo Friday July 7th 1950
A costume parade and fete was held in the grounds of Quorn House on Saturday, by permission of Mr and Mrs E G A Farnham.
The parade assembled in Castledine Street and marched to Quorn House headed by the Breaston Highlanders’ Band, Mr A S Weldon being parade marshal. Banners of the men’s and women’s branches of the British Legion were carried by Mr E Stocks, Mr H Westley and Mrs Plenty.
The fancy dresses in the parade were judged by Mr and Mrs C S Tatham as follows: 1, Sheila Bostock (Black Mammy); 2, Valerie Field (Bo-Peep); Derek Morris (Pearlie King), Gillian Tebbutt (Witch), Jean Burrows (Mary Mary), Pairs: Chris Sharpe and Michael Forby (Rupert and Bill Badger). Adults: 1 Jack Field (Prefect), Arthur Bown (Mae West).
There were various side-shows and the Breaston Highlanders gave an exhibition of the Highland fling, sword dance, foursome reel, etc.
There was a baby show and an ankle contest.
A whist drive, organised by the women’s branch of the Legion, was held in the marquee, the winners being:- Ladies: Mrs Evans, 182; Mrs Long, 171; Mrs Forsyth, 170. Gents: Mrs Birkin, 178; Mrs Allen, 173; Mr Hextall, 168; Mrs Bowley, 168.
The baby contest was won by Alan Speight, who was awarded the silver cup for the best baby in the show. The judges were Dr Walker and Miss Bullock.
Mr A Paling won the table skittles and the long alley skittles.
The winners of the baby show were: 1 (with cup for best baby), Alan Speight; 2, Michael Redman; 3, Keith Swaine.
