Retirement of Dr Wykes, Quorn, late 1970s

The retirement of Quorn doctor, Dr Wykes, 1977/78.

Left to right: Phyllis Field, Mrs Wykes, Dr Wykes, ?

This picture was supplied by Val Seal and Judith Archdale (daughters of Phyllis and Jack Field).

Eve Phillips who has lived in Quorn all her life, adds more detail:

"Doctor Wykes retired in 1977 or 1978. He was the only doctor in Quorn at this time, his surgery was next door to the White Hart pub on High Street, in a building that has now been demolished. The entrance was in a recessed door at the front of the building, which led into a waiting room containing an assortment of hard wooden chairs. He had no receptionist and was on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He frequently had to leave his surgery to attend an emergency. There were no appointments, you just turned up and sat in the waiting room. He called people in one by one, in turn, himself. After your consultation, you left via a side door.
If a home visit was necessary, you telephoned him, and he answered the phone himself. He would take the patient's name and address and then visit you later."
