Quorn's Jubilee Cash
The future of £350 that Quorn has left over from the village's Silver Jubilee Fund was discussed at a meeting in the village hall on Wednesday last week. It was generally agreed that the money should be "kept in Quorn" if possible and the chairman of the meeting, Mr P. R Brookman, invited suggestions as to how the sum should be spent. Various schemes were put forward, ranging from new railings round Stafford Orchard to the opening of a 'drop in' centre in the village based along the lines of John Storer House, Loughborough.
The idea that received most support was a suggestion from Mr W. A. Earley, a member of Quorn Parish Council, that the money should be contributed to a Parish Council scheme to convert the piece of land known as the "library site" into a landscaped garden. The Parish Council hope to buy the land from Charnwood Borough Council for what Mr Earley described as "a very reasonable price". It would then be turned into a garden and landscaped to give a pleasant approach to the Parish Church.
"Quorn is in need of a face-lift" said Mr Earley, and it was generally agreed by the meeting that a garden would be a venture worth contributing to. Mr Bookman put it to the assembly that something of a "tangible and permanent nature" should be done with the £350 and it was decided that at least part of the money should be used to buy a plaque or small monument for the garden to commemorate the jubilee.
Young people in the area will be asked to submit designs for the monument and it was decided to formally advise the Parish Council of the views of the meeting so that the matter could be thoroughly investigated.
