George Holmes
George Holmes was born in Quorn in 1896, the son of George and Georgina Holmes. He was one of ten children although only four lived beyond childhood. The family lived on Barrow Road in Quorn.
George’s grandfather was James Holmes, the blacksmith on Meeting Street. The elder George did not follow in his father’s footsteps, he went on be a carpenter and joiner, although the census returns tell us that in 1891 he was running the Bull’s Head pub on High Street.
The young George Holmes, whose large picture can be seen below, went to work in Wright’s elastic webbing factory in the village as soon as he left school. He returned to Wrights after his army service during the first war.
In 1928, aged 32, he married 36 year old Emily Steer (nee Webster). Emily was a war widow with two children aged 16 and 14. The couple lived in Quorn until they died.
On the back of the group photograph, it simply says ‘The Holmes family’. It is known that George is far right on the back row – can anyone identify anymore members of this large family group?
