Thomas Webster, Baker, The Banks, Quorn
This is a rare picture of Thomas Webster's bakers shop on the Banks,Quorn, taken in the early 1900s. Although it is often described as being at the end of the Banks, it was not demolished with the rest of the Banks cottages in the 1970s. The shop is now a house and is number 29 High Street. There is a fairly wide alley between this property and the next one, ie the present number 25, which used to be a newsagents shop. The rest of the Banks area is now pleasantly landscaped.
Thomas Webster can be seen standing in the doorway. He lived there with his wife Finette. Thomas had married Finette Dawson in 1892. The 1911 census tells us that they had five children, but only three were still living; Elsie, Emily and Tom. When she had got married, Finette also had two children that were born illegitimately; Alice and Alfred. Thomas's elder brother John lived with them at some point and helped Thomas in the business. Thomas died in the third quarter of 1915 aged 57. According to Kelly's directory of 1916, Finette continued to run the bakery business herself.
