Freehold Street - then and now
These photographs were taken looking down Freehold Street towards Victoria Street. According to 'Bygone Quorn in Photographs' published in 1984, the older photograph was taken in 1945, when the street was preparing for VE day celebrations. However in May 2022, Jennifer Warren, whose mother Phyllis was born in Quorn, recognised her grandmother, Sarah Ann Birkin (the left of the two women), who lived at 12 Freehold Street and died in April 1937. It is therefore thought that this photo was taken in May 1935 when the street was decorated for King George V's Silver Jubilee!
The most notable change, as with many of the comparisons, is the presence of vehicles and their impact on the street scene. It is also interesting that all of the houses on the left have been rendered. This seems to have happened to many of the properties in Quorn.
