£125 raised by Quorn Gala - 1969

Quorn Friends of Markfield Gala Day on Saturday made a profit of £125. In the warm sunshine Mr B Law, chairman of Quorn Parish Council, crowned the May Queen, Miss Julie Williamson, who was then carried on a carnival parade of the village.

During the past 17 years the Friends have raised over £4,000 for the hospital, the opener, Mr George Smith, told the crowd at Stafford Orchard. The money has been spent on gifts, such as television sets. Mr and Mrs Smith, who recently retired from Quorn Post Office, were introduced by the branch chairman, Mrs Bollard. A bouquet was presented to Mrs Smith by the May Queen.

Attractions at the gala included side shows and stalls, a fancy dress competition and a baby show. A comic football match was played between men and women.

Prizewinners were: Fancy dress, up to six years: Richard Warwick (The Tramp), Deborah Spicer (Chinese Girl) and Gary Wood (Mighty Mouse); 6 to 12 years: Kevin Tyler and Howard Williamson (Laurel and Hardy), Elane Calvert (Spanish Lady).

Baby show, up to 6mths: Lorraine and Darren Padget (twins), Timothy Marshall; 7 to 12 months: Gary Orton, Declan McEnery, Andrew Nesbit; 12 to 18 months: Paul Stephenson.
