Child Killed
While a man named Frank Briers was driving a heavy cart past the Pig and Whistle Inn on Tuesday afternoon, the three-year-old daughter of John Payne ran out of the gateway and colliding with the horse, was knocked down and killed. At the inquest yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, Dr Unitt said the child’s skull was badly fractured, and he thought the wheel of the cart must have passed over it. The driver, a youth named Chappell said he spoke to one little girl, and stopped the cart to enable her to get out of the way. He did not notice the other girl. A verdict of ‘accidental death’ was returned, and jury exonerating the youth from blame and expressed sympathy with the parents of the deceased.
