Stocking-making trade strike
The stocking-making trade is completely at a stand at Loughborough, and this has been the case ever since Friday se'night, when the men struck for an advance of wages. Upon that memorable day, the Sheepshead, Quorn, Barrow, Sileby, Woodhouse, Whitwick and Thringstone men, women and boys, employed in the trade, assembled together at that place, and joining the Loughborough, made a public procession through the principal streets of the town; the number of whole was computed at two thousand, and they marched two and two, en militaire, with flags dress with black crepe; the women of the each respective parish preceded the men, and in this imposing manner they went slowly and solemnly along, as if deploring some general disaster. The utmost order pervaded the whole line, and in the end they separated in the most peaceable and quiet manner, agreeing to hold out until the advanced prices were given.
