James Hartopp

Loughborough Echo - 28th April 1939

Any stranger meeting James Hartopp for the first time could gather but a vague idea of the extent of his activities, for few men can hide their light under a bushel with greater success. Yet the stranger must come from outside Leicestershire; from border to border of this county "Jimmy" Hartopp is known and respected for his business acumen, his sporting interests and his manifold acts of charity. They who know him best speak of him as a "good sport". Perhaps this is the best description which can be applied to this bluff, hail- fellow-well-met personality.

James Hartopp owned the Manor Hotel which was opened in 1899. He also owned the Bulls Head Hotel. He organised the Quorn Horticultural Soceity Annual show on the Manor grounds and also started the Table Skittles Club which ended with a hot tripe supper. The Hartopps were also responsible for building the tennis courts at the rear of the Manor which became Quorn Tennis Club.
