The Mill House Inn, Leicester Road, Quorn, early 1900s
To the left of the archway is the Mill House Inn, which at this time was run by Silas Cross, who lived there with his wife Sarah and daughter Elsie. The family can be seen standing by the door on the enlargement on the right. In the 1920s Quorn Allotment Society used the inn as its headquarters.
To the right of the archway is part of Wright's factory.
The two buildings with canopies were small shops, which were often run out of ordinary houses and cottages, with the husband also having a normal job. One of these shops was run by Charles Mee and his family. It is thought that the gentleman wearing the suit, coming out of the shop – he can just be seen on the first enlargement, behind the two women - is Charles Mee, whose great grandson (Mike Speight), still likes in the village today (2016). According to Rev'd Kelcey in 1908, Charles Mee's house was once a public house called the Crown and Cushion which closed in the late 1860s.
The end of the tall building (next to the shops) is part of Wright's Mill, since demolished.
This is another great example of the incredible amount of detail that could be captured by early cameras. Modern scanning and enhancement techniques allow us to bring this out and get so much more from these wonderful pictures.
