WW1 postcard sent to Quorn
This postcard was sent during WW1 on 20th September 1915, by Bandsman Harry Rowland Proudman, who was serving with B Company in the Leicestershire Regiment. At that point he was based at Belton Park near Grantham, and judging from the poem on the front of the card, it was sent to his sweetheart, Jennie Hall, c/o Wright’s & Son, Quorn. The poem reads:
Fond Memories
I send my loving greeting,
I send my wishes true,
Although we’re far apart dear one,
My thoughts are all of you.
On the back, Harry wrote:
"Dear Jennie,
Just a line hoping you are alright. I hope this will find you for I thought I would write to you. I wish I was back in Louth for we can`t get anything here. Were three miles from anywhere and can`t even get a smoke so you can tell how it is"
Harry Rowland Proudman was born late in 1898 in Glenfield, Leicestershire. He survived the war, but did not marry Jennie! He married Gertrude F Dobbins in 1928 and it is believed they had one son. Henry died in 1991.
Sadly no more information can be traced about Jennie. She obviously worked at Wright’s factory in Quorn, but she wasn’t born in Quorn and no relevant records can be traced.
