Friends of Markfield – Quorn Gala Day Football Tournament

During the 1960’s and 70’s the people of Quorn supported the Markfield Hospital by organising charity events, the largest of which was the Stafford Orchard Gala Day held in June each year. The ‘County Sanatorium and Isolation Hospital’ was situated on Ratby Lane, Markfield and was opened in September 1932. Patients from Quorn with tuberculosis and children, with fevers including diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid, smallpox, and meningitis were sent there.

A local school’s football tournament was held as part of the Gala Day event and would commence in mid-May and culminate in the final being played on Stafford Orchard on the Gala Day itself. In 1971 the final was played between Quorn and Sileby. Quorn narrowly lost to Sileby 1-0. Richard Herbert played on the left wing for Quorn and like all the finalists was presented with a medal. In this case a Runners Up medal.
